Mama Lou's

OMG!!!!!  This one is a story so sit back and relax.

We had been in the car driving for 2 1/2 hours to take a 2 hour hike thru Mammoth Cave and we were all hungry...starving!  Emmy, being the most adventurous one in the bunch, ask the very nice information desk receptionist where the best place in the area to eat was.  Without hesitation she said we had to go to Mama Lou's.  We got a map and verbal directions like...you can miss it pretty easy, doesn't look like much...but don't judge a book by it's cover...so off we went.  With the help of our trusty GPS,  we of course got lost. (Could have been part my fault also...just ask the kids in the car, I am sure they would agree.)

Mama Lou's
5112 South Jackson Highway
Uno, KY
There is a little big of question as to what city Mama Lou's is really in...everything from Horse Cave, KY to Munsfordville, KY, to Uno, KY.  But I am going with Uno, Ky (it was on the menu) because it is easier to remember.

Someone from the backseat spotted it first.  But Mark lead the way in!

We got out of the car and the aroma of pork cooking literally made you mouth water!  Doesn't look like much but I can tell you if we are ever within 100 miles of the place we will be stopping by!

Looks like lots of hours of cooking for this bad boy!

Get a good look so you don't miss it when you drive by.  I want to go back in the summer and sit on the porch/sidewalk and wave to the cars as they go by.  I love to see that when we are out driving the back roads.  I always wave! And if I am driving, it is always the two finger farmer wave and nod.

This is just part of the menu...below is the whole kittin' caboodle!  There should have been a wall of blue ribbons hanging there.  Even the water was delicious!  Maybe next time the Hubecap Burger will be calling our names.  I think Trevor is up for it!

And I just found out that you can by their homemade sauce from Urbanspoon!  What!  Now I know I am going back!

pulled pork sandwich with no one ounce of fat on it.

Ellis ordered a BLT with just the B.

pork shoulder, sliced to perfection

grilled cheese with a side of 'grilled' beans as Alaire calls them

puled pork, white beans, Cole slaw and Texas toast

brisket, slaw, fried potatoes and check out that cornbread!  It was like a pancake.  I a wondering if the would share the recipe.
potato salad, fried bologna sandwich and white beans
I don't know how you fix your white beans but from now on I am putting chunks of pork sausage in mine.  DELECIOUS!!!

pork shoulder with Cole slaw, potatoes and the best cornbread you ever ate in your entire life!
I wonder if they would share the recipe?  Going to write them as soon as I finish here.  I know they are on FB, I liked them!

pulled pork sandwich with lots of sauce
and it was gooooood sauce!

butterscotch pie

warm pecan pie
 pronounced pea-can pie

banana pudding

The banana pudding was so good Cassie was not sharing not even a crumb or a drop of the whipped topping with anyone.  My Dad's favorite!

The kids all got ice cream with chocolate syrup!  And I think they all licked their bowls.

chocolate pie

These are the sisters.  The one on the right was our awesome waitress.  She had us covered.  She recommended what was good and she was 100% accurate!
And check out those cute t-shirts...and yes I am now the proud owner of one.  Actually am wearing it as I am typing.  Thanks Mark and Cassie!
Mama Lou even came out to talk to us for a bit.

One important thing to remember...they don't accept credit cards...cash and checks only please.
Bet you can't beat our three ticket dinner!  Be sure to check Urbanspoon before you go for the hours.  I know they are going to be closed for vacation soon.  And I think they might be closed on Sundays.

Best little diamond in the rough we have tried in a long time....5+ stars from me!

  1. It's only 9:30 a.m. here in Colorado, but I am absolutely starving after seeing your beautiful photos!

Wanda Judd is my cousin, and her mother is my Aunt Louella. Her husband, my Uncle Jim, was one of the premier executive chefs in America, and known throughout the Sheraton and Marriott worlds before he died. So while this may look like a small BBQ place out in the country, in reality Gerald and Wanda have a rich, varied, and long culinary history.

I am very excisted that you posted these pictures—with great captions— and can't wait to visit Mama Lou's, although it's a bit of a drive for dinner from the front range.

Here's hoping your travels take you by Mama Lou's again in the near future.

    Thanks again,
